Does my child need extra EQAO prep?
Usually not. EQAO says it plainly: “students do not require additional preparation.”
The assessments follow the Ontario curriculum. A teacher helps when one part of the course is not landing, or when the online format is new.

Genie’s Student Binder: a record of every lesson.
What a certified teacher adds
- Finds the gapWorks out which part of the course is not landing, from the student’s own tests and homework.
- Teaches that part againIn a different way, at the student’s pace, one to one.
- Makes the format familiarGrade 9 and the OSSLT are written online. One practice run with the tools removes a surprise on the day.
- Plans the yearFor Grade 9, a teacher can also map the Grade 10 and 11 math courses the student needs for the program they want.

A jacket costs $80. The price is reduced by 25%, and then 13% HST is added to the reduced price. What is the final amount paid?
How a teacher would explain it
$80 × 0.75 = $60. Then $60 × 1.13 = $67.80. The common slip is adding the tax first.
What each assessment counts for
Grade 3 and Grade 6 results do not appear on the report card. Grade 9 does, and the OSSLT is part of the diploma.

How we check every teacher
In Ontario the registry is the Ontario College of Teachers public register. You can look any teacher up yourself with the Find a Teacher search on oct.ca.

A real Genie teacher profile: the licence and classroom record.
What we check
- Certificate number checked against the provincial registry
- Issuing body confirmed (the Ontario College of Teachers in Ontario)
- Matched to a live government ID
- Done before a teacher sees any student profile
What we do not claim
- Score increases or pass rates
- Guaranteed results
- That a teacher has marked EQAO
- Star ratings we have not earned
Questions parents ask

What it costs
$46/hr to $63/hr
Ontario-certified math teachers on Genie. Each teacher sets their own rate, shown on their card. The first 30 minutes are free with teachers who offer the Free discovery session.
Does Grade 9 EQAO count toward the final mark?
Yes. From the 2026-27 school year, the Grade 9 assessment counts as the written exam for MTH1W and makes up 20% of the final mark (ontario.ca, Growing Success, updated 14 October 2026).
What happens if my teen does not pass the OSSLT?
They can write it again. After two attempts with at least one unsuccessful, they can take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC), which also meets the diploma requirement. A principal can allow it earlier.
When is the OSSLT this year?
The fall window runs from 3 to 30 November 2026 and the spring window from 30 March to 19 April 2027. Your school sets the exact day.
Does my child need a teacher for EQAO?
Usually not. EQAO says its assessments follow the Ontario curriculum, so students do not require additional preparation. A teacher helps when one part of the course is not landing, or when the online format is new.
Is EQAO written online?
Yes. Students write every EQAO assessment on an electronic device at school, and an alternative version exists for students who cannot write online.
What is a good EQAO result?
EQAO reports a level from 1 to 4, not a mark. Level 3 meets the provincial standard and Level 4 exceeds it. Grade 3 and Grade 6 results do not appear on the report card.
Is the first session with a Genie teacher really free?
Yes, with teachers who show the green “Free discovery session” badge. Your first 30-minute discovery session with each of those teachers is free, as long as you have not had a lesson with them yet. No card is needed to book it. Teachers can choose not to offer it, so not every profile has the badge.
How much does an EQAO teacher cost?
Ontario-certified teachers on Genie for these assessments charge $46 to $75 an hour. Each teacher sets their own rate, and it is on their card before you book.
