About Ms. Jaffray
I taught in the Northwest Territories, first at Líídlįį Kúę Regional High School in the Dehcho region and later at Weledeh Catholic School in Yellowknife. Northern schools are small, so a teacher there covers a wide spread of grades and abilities in one room.
That is where I learned to build a lesson around a question instead of around a chapter. I teach English and geography from Grade 1 to Grade 12, and science from Grade 1 to Grade 9, and I keep the work tied to something a student can actually see outside the window.
When a student tells me a subject is pointless, I take that seriously, and then I go and find the reason it is not. Discussion first, worksheet second.
Why Ms. Jaffray teaches these subjects
I taught in northern communities where one room held a wide spread of ages and abilities, so a lesson had to be worth everybody's time or it fell apart. That is why I teach through questions rather than chapters, and why I teach English, geography and science together. They keep answering each other.
