Grade 9 Math in Ontario (MTH1W): What De-streamed Math Covers, and Where Kids Get Stuck

Short answer: MTH1W is the one math course every Ontario Grade 9 student now takes. It has no prerequisite, and since September 2021 it has replaced the old academic, applied and transfer courses. The ministry organises it into seven strands, and only five of them carry the specific expectations your child is graded against. Since September 2026 the mark is fixed by the province at 65 per cent classroom work, 20 per cent final evaluation and 15 per cent attendance and participation, and for MTH1W the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment is that 20 per cent. Three things in the course are genuinely new since 2021: coding, mathematical modelling and financial literacy. And de-streaming stops at the end of Grade 9. Grade 10 still splits into academic and applied.

Those strand names are the ministry's own, copied from the Expectations by Strand page for MTH1W and read on 10 September 2026. Keep the list somewhere, because your child's report card comments and their teacher's language both come from it.

The strand list most answers get wrong

Search "grade 9 math ontario" and the first thing Google shows you is its own AI answer. When we checked it on 10 September 2026, that answer named "Linear Relations" as one of the strands and left out the two strands at the top of the ministry's list.

Both of those are wrong. Linear relations is not a strand. It sits inside Algebra, as expectations C3 and C4. And AA and A are real strands that appear on every copy of the course.

This matters more than a naming quibble. A parent who thinks there are six graded strands will look at a report card mentioning mathematical thinking and assume something has gone missing. Nothing has. Strand A is real, it is on every course, and it is assessed inside the other strands rather than on its own.

The ministry's own curriculum page does rank near the top, which is the odd part. The answer is sitting there in public. It is buried inside expandable panels on a slow site, so the tutoring companies, practice-question sites and course shells filling the rest of the page have all summarised it instead of copying it out, and the summaries drift.

What the course is, and what it replaced

On 9 June 2021, Ontario's Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce, announced the release of the new Grade 9 math course. The release is titled "Modernized Math Course Prepares Students for Jobs of the Future and Life Skills", and its own subtitle calls it the "first update since 2005". The release makes the comparison itself: 2005 was "the same year YouTube was launched".

Two changes shipped together in that one announcement, and it helps to keep them separate.

The first is the content. The course added "mandatory new learning on coding, data literacy, mathematical modelling and an emphasis on financial literacy", in the ministry's words, as part of a four-year, $200-million math strategy.

The second is de-streaming. The same course "ends the practice of streaming Grade 9 students into applied and academic courses, a practice that has in the past disadvantaged some students". MTH1W replaced the Grade 9 academic, applied and transfer courses, and started teaching in September 2021.

So a child in Grade 9 today is in a course with no prerequisite, sitting beside classmates who would once have been sorted into two different rooms. The ministry's own course page lists the prerequisite as "None".

The two strands nobody is graded on

These two get skipped by every summary, and they are the reason the course feels different from Grade 8.

AA. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills in Mathematics. The ministry is unusually direct here. The expectation "is to be included in classroom instruction, but not in assessment, evaluation, or reporting." So the course deliberately spends time on how a student handles a problem they cannot immediately solve, and that time earns no marks.

Parents sometimes read this as filler. It is not filler in a de-streamed room, where a single class holds students who arrive with very different confidence. A. Mathematical Thinking and Making Connections. This strand "has no specific expectations". Its learning "takes place in the context of learning related to strands B through F, and it should be assessed and evaluated within these contexts."

In practice this is the strand behind the marks that frustrate strong students. A child can get the right number and lose marks on process, because A1 asks them to "apply the mathematical processes to develop a conceptual understanding of, and procedural fluency with, the mathematics they are learning". Showing the work is not a teacher's preference. It is a curriculum expectation.

Where the course gets harder than Grade 8

Three parts of MTH1W were named as new mandatory learning in the 2021 release. Those three are the places where a parent is least likely to be able to help at the kitchen table, and where the least established teaching practice exists.

The rest of the course is a step up rather than a new subject. Powers and exponent laws (B2) are usually the first place a mark drops, because the rules look simple and compound quickly. Linear and non-linear relations (C3 and C4) are where algebra stops being arithmetic with letters and starts being about how two quantities move together.

One honest caveat. That ranking of difficulty is a teaching observation, not a published statistic. EQAO reports Grade 9 results at the level of the whole assessment rather than by strand, so nobody, including us, can point to a provincial number showing which strand students lose the most marks in.

How the mark is built, and what changed this year

The formula changed in September 2026, and the version still printed on most tutoring sites is out of date. Do not use a page that tells you Grade 9 is 70 per cent coursework and 30 per cent a final evaluation. That was the old Growing Success chapter, and the ministry has replaced it.

For Grades 9 and 10, from the 2026 to 2027 school year, the ministry sets the mark like this:

MTH1W then gets a line of its own that every Grade 9 family should read. In the ministry's words: "The EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics counts as the written exam for the MTH1W course and makes up 20% of the student's mark."

Three consequences follow from that single sentence.

The EQAO assessment is no longer a low-stakes provincial sample. It is your child's math exam, and it is a fifth of the mark. Its weight is also no longer a range a school picks from: for 2025 to 2026 the ministry required schools to weight it "for at least 10% and up to a maximum of 30% of the final mark", and from 2026 to 2027 it is fixed at 20 per cent. And while all other written exams from Grades 9 to 12 must now sit in the school's designated exam period, the policy exempts this one. EQAO lists two windows for 2026 to 2027: 12 January to 5 February 2027, and 8 June to 30 June 2027.

So a Grade 9 student's math exam may well land in January rather than June. Check which window your child's school is using, because it changes when the revision has to happen. None of that makes the classroom-work share a running average of test scores. MTH1W's achievement chart is the tool a teacher uses to judge the work itself, and it sorts every piece of evidence into four categories: Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application. Each category is reported at one of four levels, and the ministry publishes the percentage bands:

What to do if the report card says Level 2

A Level 2 in MTH1W means 60 to 69 per cent, which is a pass and a warning at the same time. Grade 10 math builds directly on this course.

Try this at the kitchen table, with no timer. Ask your child to explain one question they got wrong on a recent test, out loud, without doing the arithmetic. Then ask them to do the arithmetic.

If they can explain the method and fumble the numbers, the gap is fluency, and practice fixes it. If they cannot explain what the question is asking, the gap is conceptual, and more practice makes it worse rather than better. Those two problems need opposite responses, and telling them apart takes ten minutes.

Do the same check on a coding or modelling question if there is one, separately. A child can be solid on number and algebra and genuinely lost on C2, and a single overall mark hides that completely.

What comes after MTH1W, and why it surprises people

De-streaming stopped at Grade 9. Grade 10 did not change.

The ministry says this plainly on its own mathematics page: "with the exception of the Grade 9 mathematics course, 2021 (MTH1W), the 2005 Mathematics curriculum for Grade 10 and the 2007 Mathematics curriculum for Grades 11–12 remain in effect."

So at the end of Grade 9, your child chooses between two Grade 10 courses, both issued in 2005:

The gap between a de-streamed Grade 9 and a streamed Grade 10 was large enough that the ministry had to patch it. Addenda were issued for both MPM2D and MFM2P, implemented from the 2022 to 2023 school year, and the ministry describes them as outlining "additional learning expectations that support students in their transition from the new de-streamed Grade 9 Mathematics course (MTH1W) to the current Grade 10 Mathematics courses".

The ministry's own course descriptions and prerequisites table for mathematics, updated August 2026, lists Grade 9 Mathematics, De-streamed (2021) as the prerequisite for both MPM2D and MFM2P, with no mark attached. So nothing formally locks your child out of either. The choice still matters a year early, because MPM2D is the course that leads to Grade 11 Functions, and Grade 11 is where the door to university math and science programs is actually opened or closed. Where a certified teacher fits

A certified Ontario teacher has worked inside the system that produces the mark. The four achievement chart categories are the ones classroom teachers enter themselves, so a teacher reads a returned test differently from someone who only knows the subject.

The larger difference is the map. A certified teacher can chart which courses your child needs to reach a target program, then focus the teaching on the areas that get them there. In our experience that planning is the part families come to last, often in Grade 11 when a prerequisite is already missing. Getting MTH1W right is not about this year's report card. It is about keeping MPM2D available, because MPM2D keeps Functions available, and Functions keeps the program list open.

MTH1W is one course with seven strands, five of them graded. Since September 2026 the mark is 65 per cent classroom work, 20 per cent final evaluation and 15 per cent attendance, and for this course the EQAO assessment is that 20 per cent. The three new pieces since 2021 are coding, mathematical modelling and financial literacy, and they are where most families need help. The strand names above came off the ministry's own page on 10 September 2026, which is more than the AI answer sitting above them managed on the day we looked.

The thing to act on is not the mark. It is whether Grade 10 academic math is still comfortably in reach, because that single choice at the end of Grade 9 sets the ceiling on Grade 11.

What does MTH1W cover?

The ministry's course descriptions and prerequisites table for mathematics lists MTH1W as the prerequisite for both Grade 10 courses with no mark attached, so a pass leaves both MPM2D and MFM2P available and the decision is yours and the school's. Level 3 is the provincial standard, which is 70 to 79 per cent. Whether MPM2D will feel comfortable depends on which parts of the course produced the mark, and MPM2D extends the algebra and relations work most directly, so that is the part worth checking with the teacher.
