About Mr So
I studied physiology and pharmacology before I studied teaching. Both degrees are from Western: a Bachelor of Medical Sciences first, then a Bachelor of Education in senior biology and general sciences. That order shapes how I teach. I spent a whole degree using science to answer real questions before I ever stood in front of a Grade 9 class.
I am registered with the Ontario College of Teachers, and since 2024 I have taught at Earl Haig Secondary School and Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute with the Toronto District School Board, and at Markham District High School with York Region. I teach science, biology, chemistry, physics and math from Grade 7 to Grade 12, including Advanced Functions.
I work in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. A student who thinks in one language and is examined in another loses marks in the gap between them, and that gap is usually easier to close than the science is.
Why Mr So teaches these subjects
I came to these subjects through medical science rather than through a classroom. Physiology and pharmacology are biology, chemistry and physics used at the same time on the same problem, and you cannot get through either degree by keeping them in separate piles. Most students meet the three as three separate stacks of memory work. I teach them as one, which is usually the point where the memorising stops being necessary.
