How Genie Works

22 certified teachers available for 1-on-1 online lessons, $40–$72/hr.

Genie is built around one standard: every teacher is provincially certified, and that is checked before their profile goes live. You pick the teacher yourself, from what is on their profile, and lessons run 1-on-1 online around the course your child is already taking at school.

From first search to first lesson, in five steps

Nothing is locked in until you send a request to a teacher you have already read about.

  1. 1. Search by subject and gradeStart from the subject your child is graded on and filter to the teachers who take students at that grade. Every subject also has its own page listing the teachers who cover it.
  2. 2. Check the credentials yourselfEach card and profile shows the teaching certifications that teacher has on file, their years of experience, the grades and subjects they cover, and their hourly rate. You compare before you commit to anything.
  3. 3. Request the teacher you pickedYou choose the teacher — there is no pool and no allocation. Send a request from their profile and agree the first session directly with them, around the school week.
  4. 4. Meet 1-on-1 onlineLessons are one teacher and one student, taught online over video, and built around the course the student is already taking at school rather than a generic syllabus.
  5. 5. See what they learnedA summary, a homework list and a progress update reach your phone after every single lesson. Lesson files and notes stay together in the Smart Binder, so nothing is lost between sessions.

What every teacher clears before you ever see them

The checking happens before the profile exists, not after you have paid for a lesson.

  • Provincial certification, checked before the profile existsGenie verifies provincial credentials before any teacher gets a profile. It is the one standard the platform is built around, and there are no exceptions to it.
  • Matched to the course, not just the subjectA teacher who knows the 2026 curriculum for your child's exact subject and grade — not a generalist who is confident with the material.
  • Nothing hidden until after you chooseCertifications on file, years of experience, grades, subjects and the hourly rate are all on the profile. You see more about a Genie teacher before the first lesson than most families ever learn about a local tutor.

What lands on your phone after a lesson

You should never have to ask “what did you learn today?” and get a shrug back.

The Genie app — Smart Binder with lesson files organised by subject and grade

Genie’s Smart Binder keeps every lesson file, note and summary in one place, so the next session starts where the last one finished.

How Genie works — FAQ

How does Genie work?

You search certified Canadian teachers by subject and grade, check the credentials on each profile yourself, then request the teacher you picked and agree a first 1-on-1 online lesson with them. After every lesson you get a summary, a homework list and a progress update.

Do I choose the teacher, or does Genie assign one?

You choose. Genie shows you the teachers who cover your child's subject and grade with their credentials, experience and rate, and you send a request to the one you want.

How much does a lesson cost?

Each teacher sets their own hourly rate, and rates currently run $40–$72/hr across the public roster. The rate is shown on the card and on the profile, before you send a request.

Are Genie teachers actually certified teachers?

Provincial certification is the standard Genie recruits to, and credentials are verified before a teacher gets a profile. Most public profiles also display the certificate itself and name the regulator that issued it, so you can check it yourself.

Are lessons online or in person?

Online. Lessons are one teacher and one student over video, so there is no centre to travel to and no need for a teacher in your neighbourhood.

What do I get after a lesson?

A summary of what was covered, the homework set, and a progress update — sent to your phone after every single lesson. Lesson files and notes stay together in the Smart Binder.

What grades and subjects does Genie cover?

Grade 1 to Grade 12, across mathematics, the sciences, English, French and the senior Ontario courses. Each subject has its own page listing the teachers who cover it.
