Varsity Tutors in Canada: An Honest Look, and the Alternatives (2026)

Short answer: Varsity Tutors is a US company, the flagship business of Nerdy, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Its own pages, read on 22 October 2026, show fees in US dollars, terms governed by Missouri law and US tests in its menus, with no Canadian curriculum named. They do not say it turns Canadian families away. For a student following an Ontario course, a service built around Canadian certified teachers is the closer fit.
| Service | Who teaches | How you pay | Prices published? | Canadian curriculum | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varsity Tutors | Independent contractors from varied backgrounds; no teaching licence among its listed criteria | Monthly Learning Membership, paid a month in advance | No price on varsitytutors.com; a store for ClassWallet funds lists hour packages from $525 USD | None found; menus name Common Core, AP and US state tests | Online only |
| Genie Teacher | Provincially certified teachers, 23 on the public roster | Per lesson, at each teacher's own rate | Yes, $45 to $72 an hour | Ontario course codes on its subjects page | Online only, 1-on-1 video |
| Teachers on Call | Certified teachers, retired teachers and teacher candidates | Not stated | Not published | "Curriculum-based approach" | Online and in-home, K to 12 across Canada |
| TutorLyft | "Rigorously Vetted Tutors", in its words | Pay as you go, no subscriptions | Yes, on each tutor's profile; it says most charge $40 to $75 an hour | Not stated | Online or in person across Canada |
| Superprof | Open marketplace | Per lesson at the tutor's rate, plus a Student Pass subscription to contact tutors | On each listing | Not stated | Online and in person, arranged on the listing |
| TutorOcean | Many are certified teachers; others are not | Rate set on each profile | No platform-wide rate | Not stated | Online |
| Preply | No certification required | Rate set on each profile | Only an average for English lessons | Not stated | Online |
| TVO Learn Mathify | Ontario Certified Teachers | Free | Free | Ontario math, Grades 4 to 12 | Online, set hours |
| Alloprof | Teachers, through a chat | Free; accepts donations | Free | Quebec grades, to Secondary 5 | Online |
Genie Teacher published this article and runs one of the services in the table. It is held to the same test as the rest: only what its own pages say.
What we checked, and when
On 22 October 2026 we read Varsity Tutors' homepage, its /ca address, its About, How We Operate, tutor-selection, guarantee, Terms of Use and privacy pages, its location sitemaps and the cares.varsitytutors.com store. We also read Nerdy's latest annual and quarterly filings on SEC EDGAR, Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, Wyzant's help centre and each alternative's own pages.
We read from outside Canada. Varsity's site served the same content at /ca as at its homepage, and its store answered in US dollars. A reader in Canada could see something different, but nothing we read points to a Canadian-dollar price.
Two rival comparison pages print Varsity prices. Superprof's comparison page lists Varsity memberships at "CAD 299+/month". TutorLyft's comparison page says "About $349 a month for 4 hours", a figure it credits to ConsumerAffairs, and reports one Canadian parent's quote of $729 CAD for 8 hours of SAT tutoring. We could not find any of those numbers on Varsity's own pages, so nothing below relies on them.
Does Varsity Tutors serve families in Canada?
Its own pages neither claim Canadian coverage nor rule it out.
Nerdy's annual report says "we primarily operate in the U.S. today", and that "Substantially all of the Company’s tangible long-lived assets and revenues are located within the U.S." It adds that its services are delivered over the internet, so "Experts and Learners worldwide may be able to interface with our platform." Nerdy does have a presence in Canada. It employs staff through "locally established entities in Canada and the United Kingdom", and its accounting notes say "The Company operates foreign businesses in the United Kingdom and Canada." The filing gives no Canadian revenue figure and names no Canadian consumer market.
The website points the same way. The homepage city list names twelve US cities, from New York to San Diego. On 28 September that list sat under the heading "Find Tutors Near You"; on 22 October the heading read "Cities", and the cities had not changed. The address varsitytutors.com/ca loads a page byte-identical to the homepage, with its canonical tag pointing back to it. The location sitemap lists 52 entries: the 50 US states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. No province appears.
Canada does turn up in three places. The privacy notice mentions it once, as a country whose laws may grant data rights. Varsity has pages named after Canadian universities. The University of Toronto page says Varsity "connects you with tutors who have attended or graduated from The University of Toronto", yet none of the tutor bios on it names that university; they list schools such as Harvard, Columbia and McGill. Those pages are about where a tutor studied. They say nothing about serving families in Toronto. And the Varsity store described below carries a parent testimonial signed "Grade 6 Parent, Montreal", with nothing else on the page about Canada.
Varsity's website Terms of Use, updated 8 October 2025, are governed by "the laws of the State of Missouri, USA", and say "Unless otherwise specified, all fees are in United States dollars". Neither the terms nor the privacy notice lists the countries the service covers.
Our roundup of online tutoring in Canada left Varsity out for the same reason: its own site does not show Canadian coverage.
What does Varsity Tutors cost?
varsitytutors.com publishes no price. The homepage asks visitors to "Talk with our team to explore live, one-on-one tutoring options, availability, and pricing", and /pricing returns a 404 error.
The main product is the Learning Membership, which Nerdy describes as "an ‘all access’, subscription offering". In the 10-K, "Learners pay a fixed monthly rate over the contract term", and cash "is generally collected monthly in advance".
- Unused time expires. Nerdy's filing says "unredeemed payments expire each month for Learning Memberships".
- Fees are nonrefundable. Varsity's website Terms of Use say "Except as required by law, all fees are nonrefundable".
- Cancelling is limited. The same Terms of Use say "Payments and purchases may not be canceled by the user, except as required by law."
Those website Terms may not be the whole contract. They say they "may be supplemented upon a purchase by" other documents, including "Terms of Customer Account Use", and that where the two conflict, the terms "of a specific application shall control". The guarantee page points to the same Terms of Customer Account Use. We could not find that document: no page we read links to it, and every address we tried returned a 404. The refund and cancellation rules a member signs up to may therefore differ from the website Terms, so ask for the purchase terms in writing before you sign. One refund Varsity does publish is narrow: its Pass Guarantee, for professional certification exam purchases, offers a free credit for the hours used or "a full refund on your original purchase" to a learner who meets its conditions and does not pass.
The only Varsity prices we found are on cares.varsitytutors.com, a store for families paying with ClassWallet funds. It says "To use your ClassWallet funds to set up virtual tutoring for your student, just purchase any of our 1-on-1 tutoring packages through this site." Its Grades 9 to 12 package is $525 for 9 hours, $795 for 15 hours or $1,495 for 30 hours, all in US dollars, with the hours usable "over 12 months from the initial purchase". An older store page, still live, shows $540, $825 and $1,500 for the same hour counts. Neither is the monthly Learning Membership.
For a sense of what members actually pay, Nerdy reports an average revenue per member per month (ARPM) of $366 USD at 30 June 2026, up from $348 a year earlier. Nerdy attributes that rise primarily to "price increases enacted in February 2025". It defines ARPM as "the average Consumer Learning Membership subscription revenue per member per month", and it counted 29.1 thousand active members on 30 June 2026. No family is quoted it as a price.
A monthly figure in US dollars does not line up with a Canadian hourly rate, so we have not converted it. Genie's own guide to what a tutor costs in Canada puts most private tutoring between $20 and $100 an hour in 2026, with certified teachers online at $30 to $70.
Who teaches at Varsity Tutors?
Varsity calls the people who teach "Experts". Nerdy's annual report says "We engage all of our Experts as independent contractors", about 16 thousand of them active in 2025. "They come from varied backgrounds, including teachers, professors, professionals, graduate and college students, retirees, and self-employed individuals." Screening runs through a "multi-step interview and vetting process" that uses AI, with "conditional human review".
Varsity's tutor-selection page lists its criteria, among them "Prior teaching and mentoring skills or credentials" and "Successful completion of background check". None of them asks for a teaching licence. The page does not say what kind of background check is run, or in which country. The homepage promises to "match you with a top 5% tutor"; the online tutoring page talks about "the best tutor in the U.S."
Plenty of good teaching happens without a licence. Still, "credentials" at Varsity and "certified teacher" in Canada are different claims: a certified teacher holds a provincial licence, and in Ontario that licence sits on a public register. Our guide to a certified teacher versus a tutor sets out the difference.
Can you choose or change your tutor?
Varsity's consultants do the choosing. Its How We Operate page says they "assess every student's unique needs and learning style, and help students identify a tutor that is the best fit." Varsity does publish public tutor profiles: its profile sitemap lists 25,964 of them. The one we opened carried a "Certified Tutor" badge, which is Varsity's own label; the profile names no teaching licence or licensing body. Its button reads "Connect with a tutor like Aaron", and the pages we read do not say a family can book the person on a profile rather than someone similar.
If the first session goes badly, the Tutor Satisfaction Guarantee applies. Varsity says it "will help connect you with a tutor who might be a better fit", and "Your next session will be free of charge (up to two hours based upon the actual length of the initial session)." That is a free replacement session, not a refund.
Varsity's store pages also say "Every 1-on-1 tutoring session is recorded", and that a parent can watch sessions to see how the student is doing. That is a real plus. Ask who else can watch the recordings, and for how long they are kept.
Does Varsity Tutors follow the Ontario curriculum?
Nothing on its pages says so. The store says its Learning Lab videos are "based on academic standards" without naming which. The homepage subject menu lists Common Core Math, AP courses including AP US History, and the PSAT, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, HSPT and Praxis. The sitemap page adds US state tests such as STAAR (Texas) and AIMS (Arizona). A search for "Ontario", "EQAO", "OSSLT" and "provinc" found nothing on the homepage, the sitemap page, the K-12 page or the store.
Someone on Varsity's roster may well know a Grade 10 Ontario math course. Its matching criteria say nothing about provincial curricula or licences, though, so name the course code yourself and ask whether the person has taught it.
What do reviewers say?
On Trustpilot, read on 22 October 2026, Varsity Tutors is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 13,431 reviews, 1,582 of them in the last 12 months. 87% are five-star and 6% are one-star. The profile is claimed, with a paid Trustpilot subscription, and Trustpilot notes "This company invites their customers to review, whether positive or negative". Most recent reviews carry the "Invited" label. Trustpilot's own AI summary, built from recent reviews, says "some customers also noted unexpected charges and frustrating billing issues regarding their monthly accounts". One one-star review from 4 October 2026 reads: "I called to cancel my membership and they DO NOT give you any money back."
The Better Business Bureau tells a different story on two counts. Varsity Tutors LLC is BBB Accredited, with an A+ rating, accredited since 2010, and the BBB says "Customer Reviews are not used in the calculation of the BBB Letter Grade Rating." The same profile lists 619 complaints in the last 3 years and 199 in the last 12 months. Its alert says complaints "allege the company provided unknowledgeable tutors, cancelled scheduled classes without notice, and experienced difficulty obtaining a refund." It ends: "The company has addressed all concerns brought to its attention." BBB customer reviews average 3.14 out of 5, from 228 reviews.
Varsity's homepage claims "4.9 out of 5" from "3.4M learner ratings". Those come from Varsity's own session ratings rather than an independent site.
All of these figures change daily. Across both sites, billing, cancellation and refunds come up again and again, which fits the nonrefundable terms above.
What about Wyzant?
Wyzant is the other US name that comes up next to Varsity, and its own pages disagree with each other. Its Terms of Use say all users must "reside within the United States". Its help article for students outside the US says they can register, but "you will need to input a United States zip code in order to sign up". It accepts only US cards, with PayPal for international ones. Going by its own terms, Wyzant is for US residents.
What are the Canadian alternatives?
Each of these was read on its own site on 22 October 2026.
Teachers on Call says its team "is comprised exclusively of teachers certified by the governing body for education in their province, retired teachers, and teacher candidates completing their degrees in education", with "current background checks". It covers kindergarten to Grade 12 "across Canada", online and in-home. We found no published price.
TutorLyft offers "Pay-As-You-Go Pricing, No Subscriptions or Minimum Hours Requirement", online or in person across Canada. Its FAQ says each tutor's rate shows on their profile before you book, and "Most of our tutors charge between $40 and $75 an hour." A separate plan widget on its homepage still shows "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" placeholder text beside its tiers, so we leave those tiers aside. Its own comparison table files Varsity under "Full-Service (Varsity Tutors, Tutor Doctor)".
Superprof is an open marketplace. Its guide to Canadian platforms has a "Student Picks Tutor" column, where Superprof's own entry reads "Yes, full choice via profiles/reviews", and it lists the format as "Online + in-person (tutor-arranged)". Tutors set their own rates, and its pricing line adds a "subscription to the Student Pass to contact tutors". The six tutor listings shown in that guide ran from $29 to $100 an hour, each offering a free first lesson.
TutorOcean says "Many tutors are certified teachers, while others have extensive experience in their subject area", and that cost "varies depending on the tutor and the subject being taught."
Preply tells new tutors "No specific certification or teaching experience is required", and that "On average, English tutors charge $15-25 per hour." It suits language practice better than a provincial course.
TVO Learn Mathify offers "Free 1:1 online math tutoring with Ontario Certified Teachers" for "Ontario students in Grades 4-12", during set hours. For math homework, start here before paying anyone.
Alloprof is free and accepts donations, with a "Chat with a teacher" feature. It follows Quebec's grades, up to Secondary 5.
Questions to ask any service, at the kitchen table
Write down the course code, your budget per month and the hours your child can actually do. Then ask each service these, and expect the answers in writing:
- Who will teach, and which body licensed them? For an Ontario teacher, search the name on the Ontario College of Teachers' Find a Teacher register. Each record shows the teacher's qualifications, date of initial certification, status with the College and any disciplinary history. Our guide on how to check a teacher's certification walks through it.
- What currency is the price in, and is it per lesson or per month?
- Do unused hours expire? Can I cancel, and do I get money back?
- Who picks the teacher, and what happens if it does not work out?
- Has this person taught my child's Ontario course? Give the course code.
- What background check was run, by whom, and when?
If a service cannot answer the first and third questions on paper, you have learned what you need to.
Where Genie fits
Genie Teacher is an online service with provincially certified teachers, and it wrote this article. Its How It Works page listed 23 "certified teachers available for 1-on-1 online lessons" on 22 October 2026, and says each teacher sets their own hourly rate, which ran from $45 to $72 an hour across the public roster. Genie says "every teacher is provincially certified, and that is checked before their profile goes live". Its About page says it reads the issuing body off the certificate and confirms "the teacher named on the certificate is the teacher who will be in the room with your child." Families choose from teacher profiles, and the subjects page shows Ontario course codes across 11 subjects, Grade 1 to Grade 12.
The same pages show Genie's limits. Lessons are online only, one teacher and one student over video, with no in-person option. Twenty-three teachers is a small roster, so a rare subject or a narrow time slot may have few teachers to choose from. Our roundup also found that Genie's pages do not say what its background check involves, so put the last kitchen-table question to Genie as well.
Varsity Tutors, which Chuck Cohn started in 2007, is a US service with online-only lessons, with tutors matched by its own consultants. Its website Terms of Use set fees in US dollars, apply Missouri law and call fees nonrefundable except where the law requires otherwise, and Nerdy's filing says unused membership time expires each month, but the purchase terms that can override the website Terms were not on any page we could find. None of that bars a Canadian family from signing up. It does mean the family has to do the checking itself, starting with those purchase terms. If your child needs help with a specific Ontario course, compare Varsity against a service that names that course and the licence of the person teaching it, and check the licence on the register yourself.
Every Genie teacher is provincially certified, and that is checked before their profile goes live. Lessons run 1-on-1 online around the course your child is already taking at school.
Many Genie teachers offer a free 30-minute discovery session, so you can meet one before you book a lesson.

How much does Varsity Tutors cost in Canada?
How much does Varsity Tutors cost in Canada?
Varsity Tutors publishes no price on varsitytutors.com, and its website Terms of Use say that, unless otherwise specified, all fees are in United States dollars. Its main product is a monthly Learning Membership, paid a month in advance. Nerdy, its parent company, reports an average revenue per member per month of $366 USD at 30 June 2026, which is an average across memberships rather than a price anyone is quoted. The only published Varsity prices we found, on 22 October 2026, were hour packages in a store for families paying with ClassWallet funds, from $525 USD.
Is Varsity Tutors legit?
Is Varsity Tutors legit?
Yes, it is a real company. Varsity Tutors is the flagship business of Nerdy, whose stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and it is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating. On 22 October 2026 it was rated 4.4 out of 5 from 13,431 reviews on Trustpilot, where most recent reviews are invited. The BBB listed 619 complaints in the last 3 years. Its alert names difficulty obtaining a refund among them, and adds that the company has addressed all concerns brought to its attention.
Can you cancel Varsity Tutors and get a refund?
Can you cancel Varsity Tutors and get a refund?
Varsity's website Terms of Use say "Except as required by law, all fees are nonrefundable" and "Payments and purchases may not be canceled by the user, except as required by law." Nerdy's annual report says unredeemed payments expire each month for Learning Memberships. The same Terms say purchase terms, including Terms of Customer Account Use, may supplement them and control where they conflict. We could not find those purchase terms on 22 October 2026, so ask for them in writing before signing.
Can you choose your own tutor at Varsity Tutors?
Can you choose your own tutor at Varsity Tutors?
Varsity says its education consultants assess each student and help identify the best fit. Its site also publishes public tutor profiles with a button to connect with a tutor like that person, but the pages we read do not say a family can book a named tutor. If you are not satisfied after the first session, its Tutor Satisfaction Guarantee connects you with someone else, and the next session is free, up to two hours based on the length of the first one.
Does Varsity Tutors follow the Canadian or Ontario curriculum?
Does Varsity Tutors follow the Canadian or Ontario curriculum?
Its pages do not say so. On 22 October 2026 its menus named Common Core Math, AP courses and US tests such as the PSAT, ISEE and SSAT, plus state tests such as STAAR and AIMS. A search of its homepage, sitemap page, K-12 page and store for Ontario, EQAO and OSSLT found nothing. Its tutor criteria say nothing about a provincial curriculum or a provincial teaching licence.
Is Wyzant better than Varsity Tutors for Canadian students?
Is Wyzant better than Varsity Tutors for Canadian students?
Wyzant's own Terms of Use say all users must reside within the United States. Its help centre separately tells students outside the US to sign up with a US zip code, and says its system accepts only US cards, with PayPal for international ones. The two pages contradict each other, but going by its terms, Wyzant is for US residents.
Is Varsity Tutors worth it for Canadian students?
Is Varsity Tutors worth it for Canadian students?
It depends on what the student needs. Varsity offers live online lessons with independent contractors and recorded sessions, priced in US dollars on a monthly membership, and its website Terms of Use call fees nonrefundable except where the law requires otherwise. For a student following an Ontario course, a service that names the course and the provincial licence of the person teaching it is the closer fit. TVO Learn Mathify offers free math tutoring with Ontario Certified Teachers to Ontario students in Grades 4 to 12.
