SBI4U Explained: What Grade 12 Biology Covers in Ontario, and Who Actually Needs It

TL;DR
- SBI4U is Grade 12 university-preparation biology. Its five strands are biochemistry, metabolic processes, molecular genetics, homeostasis and population dynamics.
- It has exactly one prerequisite: SBI3U. The Grade 11 college course, SBI3C, does not satisfy it, and there is no Grade 12 college biology course at all.
- Ontario does not need it for the diploma. Two science credits are compulsory, and Grade 9 and Grade 10 science cover them.
- "Requires SBI4U" means different things at different schools. It is an admission gate at some, a prerequisite inside the program at others, and the accepted Grade 12 mathematics course changes too.
What SBI4U is, and who actually needs it
Two facts sit awkwardly next to each other. Ontario does not require a single senior biology credit to graduate high school. And several university programs will not look at your child's application without SBI4U on it.
So biology is optional for the diploma and mandatory for the career. Families find this out at different times, and the ones who find out late lose a year.

Ontario lists exactly one prerequisite, and the stream named in the wording matters.
The decision your child makes in Grade 11
Most families treat Grade 11 course selection as a lighter version of the Grade 12 decision. For biology it works the other way round. Grade 11 is where the options narrow.
Ontario offers two Grade 11 biology courses, and only one of them continues into Grade 12.

Three courses. That is the entire list. There is no Grade 12 college biology course in Ontario, which surprises families who assume every subject runs a college stream.
SBI3C is a destination, not a step
SBI3C is a real course with real content, aimed at college programs. Its strands are cellular biology, microbiology, genetics, the anatomy of mammals, and plants in the natural environment, and it accepts either academic or applied Grade 10 science as a prerequisite, which makes it reachable for more students.
What it is not is a route into SBI4U. The Grade 12 prerequisite names the university-stream Grade 11 course, and the college one does not satisfy it. A principal may waive a prerequisite where they believe a student can succeed without it, but that is a case-by-case judgement call and no family should count on one.
A student who takes SBI3C in Grade 11 and then decides in Grade 12 that they want a life-sciences degree has a problem. They need SBI3U, and they need it before SBI4U.
None of that is a disaster. Just expensive, and avoidable if the Grade 11 choice is made with the destination in view.
What SBI4U actually covers
Five content strands, plus the scientific investigation skills strand that runs through all of them.
Biochemistry. The molecules life is built from, and the lab tests that identify them.
Metabolic processes. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis, explained through the laws of thermodynamics rather than memorised as diagrams. This strand is where students who coasted through Grade 11 by memorising tend to hit a wall.
Molecular genetics. DNA replication, the repair mechanisms that fix copying errors, how RNA differs from DNA, and protein synthesis. The lab work includes extracting DNA.
Homeostasis. The anatomy and physiology of the endocrine, excretory, and nervous systems, and how those systems interact to hold the body steady.
Population dynamics. Population growth, density, distribution, and the minimum viable size a population needs to survive.
Notice what is missing. No taxonomy. No plant anatomy. Very little of the descriptive, name-the-parts biology that fills Grade 11. Grade 12 is mostly molecular and systems-level.
What SBI3U covers, and why Grade 12 feels like a different subject
SBI3U has five content strands too, and the curriculum's own names for them are Diversity of Living Things, Evolution, Genetic Processes, Animals: Structure and Function, and Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Function, with the same scientific investigation skills strand alongside them.
Its genetics strand is classical. Mendelian inheritance, Punnett squares, genotype and phenotype, dominance and incomplete dominance and codominance, sex linkage, meiosis. Grade 12 picks up genetics again and immediately drops to the molecular level.
That shift catches strong students off guard. A child can earn a high SBI3U mark on organisation and recall, then find that SBI4U wants a causal explanation of why a process happens. Same subject on the timetable. Different skill being graded.
"Is SBI4U harder than SBI3U?"
Wrong question, and it leads families to the wrong preparation.
The two courses are hard in different ways. SBI3U is broad, with a lot of terminology and structures to keep straight. Students fall behind on volume. SBI4U is narrower and deeper, and students struggle with it when they cannot explain a mechanism from first principles.
A student coping with SBI3U by memorising harder is not building what SBI4U will ask for. That signal is worth more in Grade 11 than the mark itself.
What programs actually ask for: two real examples
Requirements vary by university and by program, so read the specific program page. Two examples show how far apart they sit.
[Western University, Bachelor of Science in Nursing](https://www.uwo.ca/univsec/pdf/academic_policies/admission/nursing.pdf). Under the Western University Senate admission policy for September 2026 and beyond, applicants must complete ENG4U, SBI4U, SCH4U, and one of MCR3U, MCF3M, MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U, with a minimum grade of 70% in each, plus a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses. Western also says plainly that meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission, because the program is competitive and the real cut-off moves each year.
[University of Toronto, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering](https://discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/how-to-apply/ontario/). Ontario applicants must present six Grade 12 U/M courses: ENG4U, MCV4U, SCH4U, SPH4U, MHF4U, and one more. Biology does not appear on the list, and admission averages are calculated from the five named subjects.
One health program treats SBI4U as non-negotiable. One engineering faculty does not ask for it at all. A student who takes biology because it sounds like the science-y choice, while skipping physics, can close the engineering door and think they were being sensible.
What "requires SBI4U" actually means, school by school
The phrase covers two rules and one wrinkle. At McMaster, at Queen's and at Western it is a Grade 12 admission gate, checked before anyone reads the rest of the file, and at Western that gate sits at first entry into Medical Sciences. At U of T it is not an admission requirement at all, but a prerequisite waiting inside the programs your child picks later. The wrinkle is Western's: entry to the BMSc itself is decided in the move from second year into third, on a university average rather than on SBI4U. The accepted Grade 12 mathematics course changes between schools too, and that is the detail that quietly disqualifies people.
[McMaster, Honours Health Sciences](https://hhsp.healthsci.mcmaster.ca/future-students/level-i-program/). The Grade 12 list is English, biology, chemistry, one of Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors or Data Management, one non-math, non-science, non-technology 4U or 4M credit, and one additional Grade 12 U or M course. Data Management counts here. Two requirements the course list hides: a minimum secondary school grade point average of 90%, and a supplementary application every applicant has to complete. McMaster receives over 8,000 applicants for 240 spots and says that meeting the academic requirements does not ensure admission.
[Queen's BHSc, on campus](https://bhsc.queensu.ca/future-students/admission). Direct entry from high school, and the course list is where the trap sits. ENG4U at 80% or the French equivalent, 4U biology, 4U chemistry, and one of 4U Advanced Functions or 4U Calculus and Vectors. Data Management is not accepted. A student who chose MDM4U as their Grade 12 mathematics because McMaster takes it would be ineligible at Queen's. Beyond the courses: a minimum cumulative average of 75% including the prerequisites, a required supplementary application, and an anticipated admission average of over 90% for the on-campus program.
[Queen's nursing degree, the BNSc](https://nursing.queensu.ca/undergraduate/bachelor-nursing-science-bnsc). ENG4U at a minimum of 75%, 4U biology, 4U chemistry, and a 4U mathematics course, any of them. Two more U or M level courses on top of those. Applications close February 1.
[Western, Medical Sciences leading to the BMSc](https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/bmsc/future-students/esm-vs-other.html). You cannot apply to the BMSc from high school, and that is the part most families get wrong. Ontario students register as first-entry Medical Sciences (ESM) students, indicate an intention to enter the BMSc during second year, and begin the BMSc in Year 3. Entry to Year 3 is assured for students who carry a full Year 2 course load and finish with a minimum 80% average on the required 2000-level courses. The Medical Sciences comparison page linked above adds that no mark may fall below 60%, a condition Western's separate page on the competitive pool does not repeat, though that page is where the full course load and 75% conditions come from. Below that 80% threshold, applicants go into the competitive pool with a 75% minimum. The high-school prerequisites everyone quotes belong to Medical Sciences: biology, chemistry, Calculus and Vectors, English and two electives, with physics recommended, against a typical Grade 12 cut-off in the low 90s. The Medical Sciences program page at Western reports that 82% of BMSc graduates go on to medicine (24%), dentistry (4%), a related profession (8%), graduate studies (40%) or a second degree (6%).
[U of T (St. George), Life Sciences](https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/future/ready-apply/admission-requirements/ontario-high-school). This one runs the other way round. Admission to the Life Sciences category asks for the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses, and names only ENG4U and MCV4U among them. SBI4U is not an admission requirement. It is a prerequisite for very nearly every program inside the category, because, in the faculty's own wording, "some programs of study may require additional high school subjects as prerequisites for specific courses in first year or for entry into a specific program in second year". Name the campus when you check: Scarborough and Mississauga publish different lists under the same category name.
Every one of those lists comes from the university's own admission page, and every one gets revised. Open the page for the year your child will apply, and read the math line twice.
How much science your child needs just to graduate
Two credits. That is the whole compulsory science requirement for the Ontario diploma, and Grade 9 and Grade 10 science satisfy it.
Ontario did split the diploma in 2024, so students who started Grade 9 in 2024 or later also carry a STEM group requirement that a third science credit can satisfy, while students who started in 2023 or earlier do not.
Everything after that is a choice made for reasons outside the diploma.
Working backwards to the right course
Start from the destination and read left.

The bottom row is the one to act on. SBI3U is the option-preserving choice, and it costs a student nothing except a harder Grade 11 course. One catch: SBI3U needs academic Grade 10 science, so a student coming out of applied Grade 10 science can take SBI3C but not SBI3U. If Grade 11 biology is already heavy going, that is a Grade 11 problem to solve in Grade 11.
Mathematics gets decided in the same week, and Ontario's senior math streams work the same way.
Four mistakes that cost a year
Taking SBI3C to protect the average. It works, right up until the Grade 12 prerequisite is checked.
Dropping biology after Grade 11 and deciding late. A Grade 12 change of heart usually means a summer course, a night course, or a fifth year.
Meeting the prerequisite and ignoring the grade. Western's nursing route needs 70% in SBI4U. A bare pass closes it. Prerequisite met and program closed is a common combination.
Assuming biology is the safe science. For engineering it is the wrong one. Chemistry and physics carry that weight.
Where a certified teacher changes the outcome
Grade 11 biology rewards organisation, and a student can hold a decent mark together on recall alone. Grade 12 asks for explanation. A teacher who has taught and assessed both courses can tell which of those two your child is actually doing, usually inside a session or two, and that read is the difference between fixing a study habit in Grade 11 and discovering the gap in Grade 12.
