MHF4U Explained: What Grade 12 Advanced Functions Covers, and How Hard It Is

TL;DR:
- MHF4U is Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation. It is a one-credit course with four strands: exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, polynomial and rational functions, and characteristics of functions.
- There are two routes in. The ministry's course page names MCR3U, Grade 11 Functions, or MCT4C, the Grade 12 college technology course.
- It sits in front of calculus. MHF4U must be taken before or at the same time as MCV4U, Calculus and Vectors.
- The mark works differently from 2026-27. MHF4U now ends in a written exam worth 25%, with 65% for classroom work and 10% for attendance and participation.
- How hard is it? No ministry or OUAC page we found publishes MHF4U marks or failure rates. The curriculum shows the course revisits Grade 11 exponential and trigonometric functions and extends Grade 11 quadratics, so the Grade 11 foundation matters.
What MHF4U is, and who needs it
Search "MHF4U" on Google in Canada and the first page is mostly YouTube lessons and teachers' own course sites. Useful if your child is already in the course. Not much help to a parent trying to decide whether it belongs on next year's timetable.
What follows is checked against the Ministry of Education's own documents, read on 4 November 2026.
MHF4U is the Grade 12 university-preparation course that builds on the work your child did with functions in Grade 11. The ministry describes it as a course for two groups of students: those heading into Calculus and Vectors because a university program requires it, and those who want to consolidate their mathematics before any one of a variety of university programs.
Graduation is a separate question. The Ontario diploma needs three math credits, with at least one in Grade 11 or 12, so a Grade 11 course such as MCR3U meets the requirement and MHF4U is not compulsory to graduate. University programs are where MHF4U comes in, and several of them name it.

Ontario has rewritten elementary math and Grade 9 math in recent years, but senior math has not been rewritten. The ministry's own course page, updated in August 2026, says the 2007 curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 remains in effect.
The two routes into MHF4U
The prerequisite on the ministry's course page names two courses.
MCR3U, Grade 11 Functions. This is the Grade 11 route. Grade 11 Functions introduces exponential and trigonometric functions, and MHF4U picks both up again and goes further.
MCT4C, Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology. This is the second route. The curriculum says MCT4C may help students who later decide on certain university programs to prepare for Advanced Functions. MCT4C has its own prerequisite, MCF3M or MCR3U in Grade 11.
Because MCT4C is itself a Grade 12 course, it has to be finished before MHF4U starts, and the route adds a credit.
What MHF4U covers: the four strands
The curriculum calls them strands. Many schools and textbooks call them units, and a school may order or split them differently, but the content is the same four areas.
| Strand | What the curriculum asks for | How it connects to other courses |
|---|---|---|
| A. Exponential and logarithmic functions | The link between exponential and logarithmic expressions, the laws of logarithms, the graphs of logarithmic functions, and solving exponential and simple logarithmic equations | Revisits the exponential functions introduced in Grade 11 |
| B. Trigonometric functions | Radian measure, the graphs of trigonometric functions, solving trigonometric equations, and proving trigonometric identities | Revisits the trigonometric functions introduced in Grade 11 |
| C. Polynomial and rational functions | Key features of polynomial functions, the graphs of rational functions, polynomial and simple rational equations, and polynomial and simple rational inequalities | Grade 11 quadratic functions, extended to polynomial and rational functions |
| D. Characteristics of functions | Average and instantaneous rate of change, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and composing functions, and modelling with functions | Builds the rate-of-change work that MCV4U's calculus extends |
The first three strands build directly on Grade 11 work, and strand D prepares the rate-of-change ideas that calculus extends. Grade 11 Functions supplies the starting point for exponential, trigonometric and quadratic functions, and MHF4U takes each of them further.
Is MHF4U hard? What the curriculum actually shows
Google's own AI summary for this question calls the course challenging and conceptually demanding, and repeats the old 70/30 mark split.
There is no official difficulty data. No ministry or OUAC page we found on 4 November 2026 publishes MHF4U marks or failure rates, and EQAO's only secondary math assessment is in Grade 9. Treat any quoted average mark with caution.
It builds on Grade 11. The ministry describes MHF4U as revisiting the exponential and trigonometric functions introduced in Grade 11, and extending what students know about quadratics to polynomial and rational functions.
The final exam now carries a fixed weight. From 2026-27, a 25% written exam is mandatory in MHF4U.
Four of the six programs checked set a 70% minimum. U of T Engineering, Waterloo Engineering, the Laurier BBA and Western Nursing set a minimum on the math courses themselves. More on that below.
So the curriculum shows a course that builds on Grade 11 exponential, trigonometric and quadratic work, and the 2026-27 policy ends it in a written exam worth 25% of the mark. How that lands for one student depends on how their own Grade 11 work went, which their marks and their teacher can show.
Why the 2026-27 mark split changes things
Older articles, and Google's own AI summary for this question, still say a Grade 12 course is 70% term work and a 30% final evaluation. That was the rule under Growing Success in 2010. It has been replaced.
From the 2026-27 school year, a Grade 11 or Grade 12 final mark is based on 65% classroom work completed throughout the course, 25% mandatory final evaluations, and 10% attendance and participation. For MHF4U the whole 25% is a written exam: the policy's mathematics row sets a written exam in both Grade 11 and Grade 12, and only workplace (E) and open (O) courses are exempt. There is no culminating task to spread the weight.
The policy leaves the details open. It sets no exam format, length or mark total for MHF4U, and it does not say who writes the paper. Ask the teacher early what the exam will look like, and when it falls in the exam period.
If your child's school runs exams in January and June, our guide to Ontario's high school exam and attendance rules explains how the exam period and the attendance mark work.
MHF4U and MCV4U: before or at the same time
The ministry does not give Calculus and Vectors a normal prerequisite. It says Advanced Functions must be taken prior to or concurrently with Calculus and Vectors.
MCV4U introduces calculus by extending the rate-of-change work from MHF4U's fourth strand into a more abstract, algebraic form. Strand D in Advanced Functions covers that rate-of-change work.
That leaves families with two allowed schedules:
- One after the other. MHF4U in first semester, MCV4U in second.
- Side by side. Both in the same semester or the same year. This is allowed, and the calculus course then builds on rate-of-change work the student is meeting at the same time.
Which one fits depends on your child's Grade 11 mark, the school's timetable, and when their applications need final grades. That is a conversation to have with the guidance counsellor before course selection closes.

What programs ask for: six examples
Requirements change by university, by program and by year. These come from each university's own admission page, read on 4 November 2026. They show how differently MHF4U is treated.
| Program | What it asks for | Where MHF4U sits |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto, Engineering | ENG4U, MCV4U, SCH4U, SPH4U, MHF4U and one more U or M course, with 70% or higher in each prerequisite | Required, alongside MCV4U |
| University of Waterloo, Engineering | English, physics, chemistry, Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors, within six 4U/4M courses, with a 70% minimum in each course | Required, alongside MCV4U, except in the Architecture program, which takes one of the two |
| University of Waterloo, Mathematics | Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, a 4U English and one other 4U course, within six Grade 12 U or M courses; admission averages from the mid-80s | Required, alongside MCV4U |
| Wilfrid Laurier University, BBA | Advanced Functions at 70%, English at 70%, and one of Calculus and Vectors or Data Management at 60%; admission range in the high 80s | Required at 70%, the same minimum as English; Calculus and Vectors is one of two options for the second math course |
| McMaster University, Honours Health Sciences | English, biology, chemistry, and one of Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors or Data Management, with a minimum average of 90% | One option of three |
| Western University, Nursing | ENG4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and one of MCR3U, MCF3M, MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U, each at 70% or higher | Optional; a Grade 11 math also qualifies |
The engineering and math programs checked mostly want both. U of T Engineering, Waterloo Engineering and Waterloo Math all name MHF4U and MCV4U together; Waterloo's Architecture program is the exception and takes one of the two. Because MHF4U has to come before or with MCV4U, that pair shapes the Grade 12 math schedule.
The Laurier BBA puts MHF4U ahead of calculus. At Laurier, Advanced Functions is required at 70%, the same minimum as English. A second math course is also required at 60%, and it can be Calculus and Vectors or Data Management.
The two health programs accept a substitute. McMaster Health Sciences takes Calculus and Vectors or Data Management in its place. Western's nursing degree accepts a Grade 11 math. For these two programs, MHF4U is one acceptable option among several.
Open the program page for the year your child applies, and read the math line twice. Our OUAC application guide explains how and when Grade 12 marks reach the universities.
Working backwards from the destination
Start with where your child wants to go, then read the table left to right. The rows use the six programs checked above.
| Destination | Grade 11 | Grade 12 math |
|---|---|---|
| U of T Engineering, Waterloo Engineering, Waterloo Math | MCR3U | MHF4U, then or alongside MCV4U (Waterloo's Architecture program takes one of the two) |
| Laurier BBA | MCR3U | MHF4U at 70%, plus MCV4U or MDM4U at 60% |
| McMaster Health Sciences | MCR3U | One of MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U |
| Western Nursing | MCR3U or MCF3M | None required; MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U also meet the math line |
| Not sure yet | MCR3U | MHF4U is required by four of the six programs checked, and is one option for the other two |
| Decides later on a university program that asks for Advanced Functions | MCF3M | MCT4C first, then MHF4U (check with the school) |
The bottom row is the MCT4C route described above.
Four mistakes to avoid at course selection
Treating MHF4U as optional because the diploma does not need it. The diploma's math requirement can be met with a Grade 11 credit such as MCR3U. Four of the six programs in the table above still require MHF4U.
Starting the course without checking Grade 11 functions. The course revisits Grade 11 exponential and trigonometric functions and extends Grade 11 quadratics, so check those first.
Booking MCV4U first. The ministry wording does not allow it. Advanced Functions comes before calculus or alongside it.
Reading only the prerequisite and ignoring the grade. U of T Engineering wants 70% or higher in each prerequisite. The Laurier BBA wants 70% in Advanced Functions specifically. A pass in the course can still fall below a program's own minimum.
What a certified math teacher can do with MHF4U
Course selection runs through the guidance counsellor. A certified math teacher can work alongside it, looking at the path as well as the coursework. Once a family knows the target programs, a teacher can chart the Grade 12 math courses those programs name and how MHF4U and MCV4U fit the timetable. The teaching time can then go to whichever strand is slipping.
If the gap is study habits rather than content, our guide on how to study for a test is a good place to start.
MHF4U is a one-credit course with four strands, and it has to come before or alongside Calculus and Vectors. The diploma does not need it, but four of the six programs checked here require it, so the Grade 11 choice and the MHF4U and MCV4U timing belong in the course-selection conversation with the guidance counsellor. The program's own admission page for the year your child applies is the final word on what it asks for.
MHF4U sits between Grade 11 Functions and Calculus and Vectors, and the programs that ask for it differ. Alongside the guidance counsellor's course selection, a certified math teacher can chart the math courses a target program names and focus the teaching there.

FAQ
What does MHF4U stand for?
What does MHF4U stand for?
MHF4U is the Ontario course code for Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation. The U at the end marks a university preparation course. It is a one-credit course with four strands: exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, polynomial and rational functions, and characteristics of functions.
What units are in MHF4U?
What units are in MHF4U?
The curriculum calls them strands, and MHF4U has four. They are exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, polynomial and rational functions, and characteristics of functions, which includes average and instantaneous rate of change. Schools may order or split them into more units, but the content comes from those four strands.
What is the prerequisite for MHF4U?
What is the prerequisite for MHF4U?
The ministry lists two: MCR3U, Functions, Grade 11, University Preparation, or MCT4C, Mathematics for College Technology, Grade 12, College Preparation. MCR3U is the Grade 11 route. MCT4C is a second route for a student who decides on a university program later. Its own prerequisite is MCF3M or MCR3U, and because it is a Grade 12 course it has to be completed before MHF4U starts.
Is MHF4U hard?
Is MHF4U hard?
No ministry or OUAC page we found publishes marks or failure rates for MHF4U, so there is no official answer. What the curriculum shows is that the course revisits Grade 11 exponential and trigonometric functions and extends Grade 11 quadratics to polynomial and rational functions, so the Grade 11 foundation matters. From 2026-27 it also ends in a written exam worth 25% of the mark.
Can my child take MHF4U and MCV4U at the same time?
Can my child take MHF4U and MCV4U at the same time?
Yes. The ministry says Advanced Functions must be taken prior to or concurrently with Calculus and Vectors, so taking both together is allowed, but MCV4U cannot come first. Taking MHF4U first lets the rate-of-change work in strand D come before the calculus that extends it.
Is MHF4U the same as MCV4U?
Is MHF4U the same as MCV4U?
No. MHF4U, Advanced Functions, covers exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, polynomial and rational functions, and introduces rates of change. MCV4U, Calculus and Vectors, introduces calculus by building on that rate-of-change work. The engineering and math programs checked for this article ask for both, except Waterloo's Architecture program, which takes one of the two.
Is there a final exam in MHF4U?
Is there a final exam in MHF4U?
Yes. From the 2026-27 school year, MHF4U ends in a mandatory written exam worth 25% of the final mark, as do other Grade 11 and 12 math courses apart from workplace (E) and open (O) courses. The rest is 65% classroom work and 10% attendance and participation, replacing the old 70/30 split. The policy does not set the exam format, so ask the teacher what it will look like.
Does my child need MHF4U to graduate?
Does my child need MHF4U to graduate?
No. The Ontario diploma needs three math credits, with at least one in Grade 11 or 12, so a Grade 11 course such as MCR3U meets the requirement and MHF4U is not compulsory to graduate. MHF4U matters for university admission. Of the six programs checked for this article, four required it and two accepted it as one option among several.
Which university programs require MHF4U?
Which university programs require MHF4U?
It depends on the program, so check each university's own admission page. On 4 November 2026, University of Toronto Engineering, University of Waterloo Engineering and Waterloo Math all named Advanced Functions together with Calculus and Vectors. The Laurier BBA required Advanced Functions at 70%, plus Calculus and Vectors or Data Management at 60%. McMaster Health Sciences accepted it as one of three math options.
What grade do universities want in MHF4U?
What grade do universities want in MHF4U?
It varies. Some programs set a minimum on the course itself: University of Toronto Engineering asks for 70% or higher in each prerequisite, University of Waterloo Engineering sets 70% in each course, and the Laurier BBA asks for 70% in Advanced Functions. Programs also look at the overall admission average: Waterloo Math lists averages from the mid-80s, the Laurier BBA a range in the high 80s, and McMaster Health Sciences a minimum average of 90%.
Has the MHF4U curriculum changed?
Has the MHF4U curriculum changed?
No. The ministry's course page, updated in August 2026, says the 2007 Grades 11 and 12 mathematics curriculum remains in effect, and Grade 11 and 12 math courses continue to be based on it. What changed for 2026-27 is how the final mark is calculated. The course content is the same.
Is the first session with a Genie teacher really free?
Is the first session with a Genie teacher really free?
Yes, with teachers who show the green “Free discovery session” badge. Your first 30-minute discovery session with each of those teachers is free, as long as you have not had a lesson with them yet. No card is needed to book it. Teachers can choose not to offer it, so not every profile has the badge.
